Significant research was done before this house was constructed, including our team walking through the Japanese house at the Children’s Museum in Boston. Next, our client, the architect, and the team visited the Shofuso house in Philadelphia to study and learn more about traditional Japanese architecture and building materials and techniques. Unique elements include textured plaster flown from Japan and flooring consisting of Tatami mats in the teahouse and the bedroom. The house is laid out in a Japanese form of measurement.
